"To whom ever finds this note, please help us. We are in grave danger from forces that can only have come from the Withermoon.
My name is Costin and I live in Serenity Valley. A few nights ago, when the Withermoon began, there was a rumbling under the castle in which I work. The guards who investigated the disturbance said they saw nothing. The next day, however, the castle staff began to act strangely.
They began wearing porcelain masks.
Every hour more and more of us are covering our faces with these masks. I have no idea where these masks are coming from. I am afraid of the force that is causing this, that it will not end with the Withermoon. I pray that you will put this letter into the hands of someone who can help us, before we lose ourselves to whatever demon is causing this."
Rajani got up and began to pace. "This may be my imagination, but when that thing came out of The Void, I felt a sort of...loss of self. I thought it was just fear but maybe..."
"It's worth looking into," Reggie said. "Worst case, if it is not that thing, at least we will have ruled it out."
Dally nodded. "Let's go see how Kharnyx and Tim are making out in the lab."
Before any of them could move, a fist pounded on the door and Oksana burst in.
"Why the hell is she here?" she demanded.
Dally raised an eyebrow. Oksana stared at her. Dally stared back. As she stood, she said, "First of all, you do NOT speak to me like that. Second, she has been rendered harmless by a spell. Third, it's the Withermoon and there are larger, more dangerous forces at play that we need to deal with. If you are that uncomfortable, you can take Necryx and go stay at Obsi's base for a bit."
"Maybe I will," Oksana huffed as she marched out.
Dally sighed. "Ok, now let's go." As they got closer to the lab, the sound of excited voices from within caused them to walk more quickly. As they entered, they saw Kharnyx and Tim leaning over a book and Kharnyx was pointing a long bony finger at a crudely drawn picture.
"This is it!" she said, clasping her hands in front of her.
Dally walked over and looked at the page. There was only one word on the page.
An unseen floating eye outside the lab window telepathically sent the images back to its master. The dragon snorted, called its spy back to it, and went about finding the creature it had been tracking for days.
