Obsi's blood ran cold. The last time she had seen Nightshade this close he was ridden by Kharnyx. She tried to see if the dragon carried a rider, and Nightshade sneered at her and stood on his back legs to show her no, he had no rider.
"What are you doing here?" she demanded.
My master Xander sent me to give you a message. You will fail. Kharnyx will rise again. You and Dallyah will fall.
Obsi snorted. "You can tell Xander that he can kiss my lily white behind. He will be the one to fail."
You know he does not understand me.
Obsi nodded. "He does not understand you on any level, which would tell you something very important if you were inclined to pay attention. Now go home, Nightshade. I have business to attend to here."
As you wish, Nightshade said as he took to the sky.
"What was that?" Leilani asked, her eyes wide.
"My evil cousin sent him to find me. But Nightshade can't tell him where I am, so I don't think we have anything to worry about. Although I should tell Dally about this later." She took a deep breath and motioned toward the cave. "Can you come in with me or should I go alone?"
"Alone," Leilani answered. "I do not want to offend Namaka by going in when she has summoned only you."
Obsi took another deep breath and steeled herself. "Ok, I'm going in. If I don't come out..."
"You will," Leilani stated. "I will see you soon."
Obsi smiled and slowly walked into the cave. It took a moment for her eyes to adjust. There was barely enough ambient light for her to see the outline of an altar ahead of her and a pathway to her right. She slowly followed the pathway. As she proceeded deeper into the cave, she heard a voice in her head.
The people of the Island Nations know me and fear me. The Wind, Wave and Fire Tribes know my power. The one who keeps their nets full of fish and the tides moving on command. The waves break when I call, they are my children; tsunamis are their rides, swells are their bath and the riptides bring them back to me. I am Namaka...your bases will bow before me...The Goddess of the Sea...
As the last word faded, Obsi found herself walking into a large opening in the cave. A narrow walkway led out over a huge body of water. From the high wall across from her water fell from an invisible source into the lake. Something moved behind the curtain of water. Obsi froze.
"Obsidian Wraith," a voice from behind the water called. "I have brought you here to prevent my tribes from declaring war. The one in the Fire Tribe called Vulc is inciting this war for their own personal gain. They are not one of my children. They do not belong here. My sister Pele was not able to make them hear her when the volcanos erupted. The Fire Leader has been blind to the deceptions of Vulc. Only someone they see as a goddess will be able to prove this."
"But I don't know how to do this," Obsi blurted out. "I want to do what you ask of me, but I don't know how."
The waterfall shuddered as Namaka pushed her massive head through, stopping inches away from Obsi. "You will know when the time comes. You need to believe in yourself, Obsidian Wraith. I believe in you."
Obsi was shaking as she reached out and gently touched Namaka between her eyes. The goddess slowly retreated back behind the waterfall.
"Go, Obsidian Wraith, the Fire Tribe is approaching."
"I will do my best, Namaka. Thank you for trusting me. I hope I can prove that I deserve it."
Obsi turned and slowly followed the path back up to the entrance of the cave. She squinted as the light hit her eyes when she emerged into the jungle. Leilani was standing exactly where Obsi had last seen her.
"What happened?" she whispered.
Obsi shook her head. "I'll tell you on the way back to the village. The Fire Tribe is coming and this time it will not be peaceful."
"I don't know, but I intend to find out."
