"What is it, Father?" she asked.
"The Fire tribe is coming in their war boats," Ano replied angrily. "I thought we had settled this!"
"It's not the Fire leader," Obsi interjected. "It's Vulc. Namaka said Vulc wants the Island Tribes to war."
Ano's eyes widened and he took a step back. "You spoke with Namaka?" he whispered.
The rest of the village fell silent and all eyes turned to Obsi. The only movement was Firefin flying erratically overhead. Obsi gulped. "Yes, Meglok told me to go and see her. Namaka said I must stop this." She ended there, not wanting to admit out loud that she had no idea how she was going to accomplish the task.
You will know when the time comes.
Obsi took a deep breath and watched the Wave Tribe lower themselves to their knees before her. "Stand, please," she beckoned. As they did, she walked over to Ano and faced him.
"What are your defenses like?"
Ano crossed his arms in front of his massive chest. "We have lookout towers and archer stations on the cliffs near the beach. This is meant to slow them down while we set up the barricades and traps on the beach."
Obsi shook her head. "You all have a lot to learn about defending a base. Ok, so where are we with this process?"
Ano smiled slightly. "I have dispatched the lookouts and the archers. The barricades are being set up as well."
Obsi nodded. "Everyone else must arm themselves with whatever weapons they have. I am hoping this doesn't escalate to violence, but we must be prepared." Ano nodded as he and Leilani turned to assist the villagers in arming themselves. Once they were ready, the Tribe headed for the beach.
The tide line had been lined with a barricade of sharpened bamboo, points facing the water. Behind the barrier stood the village warriors, armed with a variety of hand-to-hand and projectile weapons. Ano, Leilani and Maiara went around the barrier and waited for the Fire boats to get closer.
Obsi looked around nervously.
You will know what to do.
She walked around the barrier and stood with Leilani.
On the bow of the lead boat stood a tall, cloaked figure, head hidden under a large hood. Vulc.
As the boat got closer, Obsi noticed Vulc was holding a bag with something large and round inside. Suddenly Vulc threw the bag onto the beach, and the contents rolled out and stopped at Ano's feet.
The head of the Fire Tribe leader.
"If you do not want the same fate, Ano of the Wave Tribe, surrender your island now," Vulc said in an androgynous voice.
"I know that voice," Obsi whispered. As the realization spread over her like a cold blanket, she grabbed Leilani's arm.
"Cover me," she said. Before Leilani could react, Obsi ran to the far side of the beach and jumped into the water.
Vulc and the Fire tribe in the surrounding boats laughed.
"So much for your Goddess," Vulc taunted. "What do you say, Ano?"
Firefin dove over the Fire tribe boats and destroyed two of them with his fireballs, sending the boats' occupants into the sea. Before the Fire tribe could react, the sea behind them erupted as Dreth burst forth, Obsi standing on his back. The tidal waves knocked the rest of the Fire tribe, including Vulc, into the water. The waves stopped short of the beach. They scrambled to grab their weapons and swam for the shore. As the first of the Fire Tribe set foot on the sand, the jungle behind them shook. The volcanos on the Fire Island became visible as they spew streams of molten anger into the sky. Vulc, still hooded, crawled onto the beach. Leilani took a step toward Vulc, but the cunning mage knocked her off her feet. Before Leilani hit the sand, Namaka rose from the jungle, her long, slender body held straight as she rocketed high into the air. Some of the Fire tribe shook their heads, as if a spell they were under was broken. Dreth flew over and took his place behind Namaka as she slowly glided toward the beach. A wall of water rose and separated the Fire Tribe from their boats.
The Fire Tribe has been corrupted. Only those who are truly my children will survive my wrath. You did not heed the warnings of Pele. Now she too will take her revenge.
With that, Namaka dove toward the water. Dozens of sharks of many varieties burst forth and grabbed the corrupted Fire tribesfolk and dragged them to the depths. Leilani lunged at Vulc and tried to pull them onto the beach. In doing so, Vulc's hood was knocked askew, revealing a pale face with long blonde hair.
Obsi saw who it was and tried to steer Dreth toward Vulc. Before she could, however, Vulc disappeared. Dreth landed on the beach and Obsi jumped off. He flew into the wave wall and it collapsed, leaving a calm sea behind. Meglok emerged from the water. The members of the Fire Tribe who were in the process of surrendering froze. The Wave Tribe fell to their knees. Obsi thought she heard Maiara weeping.
Meglok raised his head and watched Namaka as she circled overhead several times then disappeared into the jungle.
"Well done, Obsidian Wraith," Meglok said. "You have saved the Island Tribes. But, there is more to do with this stranger, yes?"
"Thank you, oh great Meglok," Obsi said softly. "And yes, unfortunately there is."
Meglok nodded, turned and lumbered over to where Maiara stood.
"You are the true leader of the Wave Tribe, Maiara. Take your rightful place and reign in peace for many years to come."
Maiara smiled through her tears of joy. "Thank you, Great Meglok. I will honor you and Namaka as this tribe always has."
Meglok turned to Ano. "You have led this tribe well, Ano, but I feel your heart is longing for more. Use this opportunity to find what you seek." Ano nodded, speechless, as Meglok returned to the water.
Leilani stood beside Obsi as they watched Meglok disappear beneath the waves. "Well," she said, patting Obsi's shoulder, "you did it."
Obsi snorted. "Yes, but it's not over. Not by a long shot."
