“Well hello Dallyah!” Saito called.
“Is he blind?” Reginald whispered as he started to wave.
Dally laughed. “Only in the literal sense.” She walked over and hugged Saito. “This is Reginald Masterson and his daughter, Raijani.”
“Ah, the private investigator from Bridgewater,” Saito said as he extended his hand to Reginald.
“Why, yes,” Reginald responded as he shook Saito’s hand.
“Your reputation preceeds you, my friend. Welcome to my humble home. What brings you to the Ridge?”
“Well, we are trying to find the creature that escaped The Void this Withermoon,” Reginald explained.
“We may have something for you then,” Saito said, waving Kuma and Haiji down from the roof. He motioned for the trio to follow him into the cabin. As they arranged themselves around the low table, Kuma grabbed a large sack and placed it on the floor next to him.
Kuma took the sack and dumped the contents onto the center of the table.
It was a huge purple eye with an arrow stuck through it.
“Haiji shot that down a few days ago,” Saito explained.
“It was…not attached to anything?” Reginald asked.
“No,” Haiji replied.
“That looks nothing like what came through the portal,” Rajani said. “There was nothing floating around that thing.”
“How…” Saito jumped up as the eye darted off the table and passed him on its way out the door. Rajani and Dally followed it outside. Raijani raised her hand, said a few words, and the eye erupted in flame and exploded.
An agonizing cry came from the hills. Then a rumble, the sound of crashing trees, and three more autonomous eyeballs came whizzing towards them. Behind them was a huge creature with what appeared to be another eye inside of its mouth. Its’ wings were mesmerizing; living reflections of the night sky. It roared, seemingly impossibly, and started to dive towards the cabin.
It was stopped in midair.
Dally looked behind her and saw a beautiful purple and orange dragon. It seemed to slither through the air more than fly, and it held the eyeball dragon still. Its wings and mane seemed to be made of liquid fire. The fire dragon roared and shot a bolt of magma at the eyeball dragon. The eyeball dragon again roared in pain, then fled.
The fire dragon landed and lowered its head to the ground. It looked at Dally, its eyes piercing hers and causing an instant of acute pain. Then she heard its voice:
My name is Hyaku. I am from a place beyond the stars, on the other side of what you call The Void. The creatures from The Void destroyed all life on the worlds surrounding mine. My species, however, is immune to them. Since they could not destroy or convert us, they instead destroyed our world. We encased ourselves in rock and have floated through space for many years. I landed here during the last Void disturbance but was unable to chase the Void creatures away.
Dally realized the dragon was making her speak the words. She looked at Saito.
"Can we kill these monsters?" he asked.
"No," Hyaku replied. "However, wherever I go they cannot if I stay for a night. I can protect some of your land but not all of it." With that, he took off.
For the rest of the Withermoon, Dally followed Hyaku from place to place, casting his protection over towns each night. She joined Rajani and Kharnyx at the portal on the last night of the Withermoon and watched the creatures crawl back into The Void. Krieger recorded as meticulously as possible their appearance and the stories they'd gathered of what havoc they'd wrought.
Once the portal closed, they all went their separate ways.
